The political and financial developments of the last six months have been so dramatic that they must be leaving an imprint in our collective subconsciousness. Like with any significant experience, we learn lessons from it and involuntarily change our judgment when similar events in the future occur. I've written an article about this at Crunchreport.com.

Certainly there are very nice, very well built homes in the US. My cousin e.g. builds houses in the Nothwest with high insulation standards and geothermic heating and cooling systems for years. However, old houses built 50- 30 years ago (as my house I rented in the US) typically come with poor insulation because the poor people living in them could not afford an upgrade. These are the people which are hit most by the high price of gas and oil. Certainly this can be changed.
I am pretty sure that the US will manage the current energy crisis as many crisis before - that's really the strength of the US society. It's up to you wether you look for information available in the world or not. Remember - US invented the Internet. Why shouldn't we use it to exchange information?

You are referring to the plans of car manufacturers in the year 2011. It is a good sign that American car manufacturers finally care for fuel efficiency. However, this will help only in the long run. Typically cars are on the road for 10 years. Thus the old guzzlers will need lots of fuel in the coming years. Typical Europeans do not drive Mercedes or BMW - they are too expensive for most Europeans. Surprisingly these cars are sold at much higher price in Europe than in US. Most people think that a BMW or a Mercedes does not give enough value for the money much like you. Tyically Europeans are driving rather small cars with typically > 25 miles/gallon because there are high taxes on gas in most European countries. It’s mostly about money and not green feelings. Certainly Europeans got lots of help after the war and have learnt a lot from the US. They buy buy lots of US products. Maybe it’s not to bad to look around in the world what other people are doing. It’s up to you what you do with the information provided.

Hey "wise" man, your pride is getting in the way of your facts.

Check out the MPG averages of car manufacturers and you'll find that the German ones are the lowest in the world and every single US manufacturer is above BMW.

BMW's quality has dropped off drastically in recent years while the prices have shot up--maybe that's why they're laying off?

ah yes....that's what America is missing, a patronizing, arrogant European to tell us how we do everything wrong.

And typical of the xenophobe you appear to be, you pick out the exception and present it as the rule because it makes you feel superior.

You talk about a house in the northeast "with no insulation". Either you're dead wrong or you have an illegally built house--neither makes your argument worth much.

You swell with pride as you talk about "gas guzzling" american cars and then point out BMW of all things as a better alternative??? Hello, Mercedez and BMW are full of cars that get less than 20 MPG! You ever look at the gas mileage of an X5 or 500 series?

But when you get the reception here that your arrogance deserves, you'll just write us off as unable to see your wisdom--in true "old europe" style.
